ZONES
If Online Gym Buff allowed participants to generate a physical identity while existing in virtual space, could this project generate a virtual identity while existing in physical space?
My idea involves the creation of a wearable object or piece of clothing, that can somehow sense the body position of the wearer. The clothing would be able to communicate wirelessly with others of its type.
When two or more people wearing the device were in roughly the same body position, the clothing would begin to glow or hum or change in some way. The more people in the same position, the more the clothing device would react.
Participants may try to adjust their position to find a network/group of people that would all glow. Or maybe they would try to find completely unique positions that would be indicated by a lack of light or sound.
The goal is to create the sense of connection to a larger network as well as the freedom of self expression, while allowing participants to engage with their bodies instead of sitting at a computer. The piece could inspire movment, (or not). However, it would not be simply reinforcing the preconditioned routines of gym culture. It would really be more of an experiment in creating a body/physical interface to an [online?] social network. I think this is sort of the reverse of what Online Gym Buff does.
