Today was hard because I didn’t feel like doing anything really but this is a project that I can’t take a break from and I don’t get to stop. There is not a lot of documentation, and following the script and maintaining the performance integrity becomes crucial. I leveraged this to force myself to do silly things I usually am not able to force myself to do and I wondered why an art project seemed so much more important of a reason to me than just being a normal responsible person. I had assumed that the difficult parts of this project would come from specific script additions but I didn’t think so much about the effect of all these lines and directions adding up. I was really feeling the control aspects of it all.

I’m trying to incorporate some regularly contributing collaborators into this both to maintain enough participation to build a script each day, and to try to allow others to feel the durational aspect of this. The changes and insights that come from doing this continuously over an extended period of time.

[Setting: bedroom. 6am.]

[LAUREN Gets out of bed and goes for a run. Since yesterday was boring, she she will take an unknown route. Also, ugly being the new cool, she will bring her phone and take a picture of every ugly thing she encounters during the run.]

[LAUREN decides it's time to take care of some things she's been putting off. She mails a pair of spandex tights to Hana. She settles an incorrectly issued parking ticket. She gets a smog check for her car. She cleans her bathroom.]

[Whenever LAUREN decides to have lunch, she buys something, brings it into a grassy area, and for an hour thinks of nothing except enjoying the heat of the sun, the feeling of being alive, the taste of food entering her body, and all the perceptual sensations the day brings. No work gets done, no emails are written, no plans are made. Nothing is accomplished, at least by ordinary standards. Yet she enjoys the freedom and time immensely.]

[Setting: California NanoSystems Institute. 4pm.]

[LAUREN arrives at Outlaw Biology symposium. She smiles as much as possible the entire time. She talks to five people she doesn't know and finds out something surprising or interesting about each of them.]
