posted 07/29

I forgot that sometime in the midst of some random project a few months ago I came across the Brooklyn Museum’s 1stfans twitter art project. Anyway, now I’m the twitter artist of the month for August. Here we go again…

Check the 1stfans blog for the long and short of it.

So I suppose this means my showers may have to last for more than 1-2 mins next month…

Hands-Free-Auto-OK/GOOD/GREAT-BYE! Machine

posted 07/14

In September I will be leaving Boston, after spending the past 5 years here. To deal with the emotionally and logistically overwhelming task of giving a goodbye hug to all of the acquaintances and friends I have accumulated over this time, I am creating the Hands-Free-Auto-OK/GOOD/GREAT-BYE! Machine.

Each person that approaches the machine is presented with the question “what kind of friends were we?” Thy indicate their opinion by turning a dial that ranges from “OK” to “GOOD” to “GREAT”. The person then presses the “BYE!” button, triggering the machine to administer an ok/good/great-bye hug. Inflatable arms inflate and rise up around the person, encompassing them in a hug for an amount of time and firmness determined by the OK/GOOD/GREAT dial. At the end of the hug, the arms deflate and fall limply again to the sides of the machine, awaiting the next person.

“Devices have, therefore, lines of visibility, enunciation, lines of forces, lines of subjectivisation, lines of rupture, of fissure, of fracture which criss-cross each other and mix up while some provoke others by means of variations or even mutations of disposition.”

“There are times we want to be aliens and strangers, to feel how the shape of our lives is not the only shape, to drift before a catalog of possible lives, staring at the glass arcades of shoes that are sensible and shoes for taking a chance, buses for leaving town and the gray stream railway depot where men and women hurry by with their bags…

…Sometimes we go to the market to taste estrangement, if only to fantasize what our next attachment will be.” (88)

overhere at the gershwin hotel

posted 05/19

I’m working on a project in collaboration with a canary torsi. Two dancers perform in a bathroom. A writer has created twitter feeds further developing these two characters. I am creating an audio installation for the lobby of the performance (overhere), as well as a website which displays and maps twitters sent from participants in bathrooms (overheredarkhorse.com).

On Monday I visited the Gershwin Hotel (the site of the performance and installation) and took some pictures of the site.

So yeh, a weirdo space. I’m supposed to make some objects and shove some speakers inside. I was worried about the thing I make not fitting into the environment but clearly that shouldn’t be too much of a problem. Soo if you have any great ideas…
