BODY EXTENSION 2005
The transformable heels simultaneously gave me the freedom of spontaneous movement and the ability to conform to formal dress standards.
Creating an object that served as a body extension in some way was an interesting project because it was very personal.
Running is an essential part of my life. I wear running shoes as often as possible because I like the freedom of knowing that I can start running at any moment. I am uncomfortable in situations where I cannot do this.
To solve this problem, I made a pair of shoes that would allow me to have freedom of spontaneous movement while conforming to formal dress standards. I transformed a pair of running shoes by decorating them and removing parts of the rubber soles to attach hinged heels. The heels can fold up and lay flat to function as normal running shoes. In formal situations, they can be folded down to function as heeled dress shoes.
